Bygget og udviklet af Porsche. Den rå karrosse blev banket ud hos Mercedes i Sindelfingen og herefter fragtet til Zuffenhausen, hvor Porsche-ingeniørerne stod for resten. Undervognen blev naturligvis afstemt til at kapere de mange kræfter med kortere fjedre og andre dæmpere, men den stående ordre fra Mercedes-toppen var klar: E-klassen skulle stadig være komfortabel. Idéen om en stor sedan med sportsvognspræstationer kom ikke ud af ingenting. BMW havde allerede i 1985 lanceret sin M5 med række-6’eren fra sportsvognen M1, og ambitiøse Audi lod i 1988 porten gå op for topmodellen V8, som dog handlede mere om luksus end præstationer. Mercedes gik efter at forhøje spillets indsats og hentede drivline (samt bremser) i Autobahn-bomben 500 SL. Den nye V8’er med koden M119 var i virkeligheden baseret på et design, der stammede tilbage fra 1969. Men med elekronisk Jetronic-system fra Bosch, dobbelt overliggende knastaksler, fire ventiler per cylinder og variabel ventilstyring på indsugningssiden havde den den nødvendige pondus. Da kravet om at bygge en ægte Mercedes og ikke en gadelovlig DTM-racer hang tungt over udviklingsteamet, blev udyret koblet til den sløve, 4-trins automatgearkasse fra Mercedes 500 SL. Dog med en lidt anden gearing af bagtøjet, hvilket sammen med ekstra 20 Nm moment betød, at 500 E gik fra 0-100 km/t på 6,1 sek. Det var 0,1 sek. hurtigere end SL. Og nok så vigtigt, 0,2 sek. hurtigere end BMW M5. I alt 10.476 biler blev bygget og lige netop denne bil blev produceret Oktober 1990 hvor det hele startede og er blandt de første håndlavede 46 eksemplarer af dette vidunder som blev lavet dette år. Så denne bil er en meget sikker og god investering
